Taqueria Varitas

Overview

Walking into Taqueria Varitas feels like stepping into the kind of neighborhood spot locals quietly guard as their own. Located at 700 E 47th St unit b, Chicago, IL 60653, United States, this small taqueria carries the energy of a place built around food first, not flash. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, often after long workdays, and the consistency is what keeps pulling me back. The smell of grilled carne asada hits before you even read the menu board, and that alone sets expectations high.

The menu sticks to Mexican street food classics, but the execution shows care. Tacos come loaded but balanced, with warm corn tortillas that don’t fall apart halfway through. One visit, I watched a cook hand-press tortillas during a lunch rush, which explains the texture-soft, slightly charred, and sturdy. According to culinary research shared by the Tortilla Industry Association, freshly pressed corn tortillas retain more aroma and structural integrity than pre-packaged alternatives, and you can taste that difference here. The al pastor is sliced straight from the spit, juicy with just enough crisp edge, while the barbacoa is slow-cooked until it practically melts, a method widely recommended by chefs from organizations like the Culinary Institute of America for maximizing flavor in tougher cuts of meat.

I’ve brought first-timers here who usually judge a place by its burritos, and the reactions are almost predictable. Burritos are hefty without being sloppy, layered thoughtfully so every bite includes rice, beans, protein, and salsa. One friend, a nutrition coach, appreciated that portions feel filling without being excessive. That lines up with data from the USDA, which notes that balanced meals combining protein, carbohydrates, and fiber improve satiety and energy levels. You won’t find calorie counts posted, but the food feels real and grounding rather than over-processed.

Reviews from locals often highlight the salsa bar, and it deserves the attention. There’s a smoky roja, a bright verde, and a hotter option that sneaks up on you. I once overheard a regular say this place knows heat without hiding flavor, and that sums it up. Chilies are toasted properly, not drowned in vinegar, which is a technique backed by food science research from the University of California on capsaicin release and flavor development. The result is spice that enhances rather than overwhelms.

Service at this location is casual but efficient. Orders come out fast, even during busy dinner hours, which suggests a well-practiced kitchen workflow. From a professional standpoint, that kind of speed usually means prep is done in-house earlier in the day, not rushed or outsourced. It also explains why the food tastes consistent across visits. While the dining area is simple, it stays clean, and tables turn over quickly, making it easy to grab a seat without long waits.

There are limitations worth noting. Seating is limited, so large groups may feel cramped, and parking on 47th Street can be hit or miss during peak hours. Still, those are small trade-offs for a place focused on getting the food right. In a city packed with Mexican restaurants across multiple locations, Taqueria Varitas holds its own by sticking to fundamentals and respecting the cuisine.

For anyone who reads reviews before choosing where to eat, this diner-style taqueria delivers exactly what people hope for when searching for authentic tacos in Chicago. It’s not trying to reinvent Mexican food; it’s refining it, one plate at a time, and that honesty shows in every bite.

It's been a while since I had nachos that tasted so good. Everything was fresh and well-seasoned! You could tell it was intentionally made with care. I loved everything about my jerk chicken nachos today and I'm so delighted that I don't have to travel far anymore for outstanding Mexican food! I've got a new spot and I look forward to trying other items on the menu! I highly recommend Taqueria Varitas!

This place was so awesome. By far the best Mexican food I've found in the area. We got a burrito, nachos, and quesabirria tacos and everything was incredibly good. The service was also notably very nice, even though I was only inside for a minute to pick up my order. Prices are very reasonable. Free street parking nearby. Definitely come here if you are looking for good Mexican food in the area!

My friend and I decided to try Taqueria Varitas, I have to say it was very pleasant. I got the vibe of family owned and very passionate about the quality of the food. I got the Torta dinner and I will say it was very tasty. I like the salsas that we got the creamy jalapeΓ±o one was fire! The service was also very nice as it seemed lots of regular customers come! I will say check out a local food spot that is on my list of places that I enjoy!

This place never misses!!! You can have your tacos ANY way that you could imagine. So many options, I have had each type of birria, lamb, goat, chicken and beef! The rice and beans have depth and a really nice surprise….the Salsa Matcha, they give you a container for $4.00, that last us a few months. There’s always a soup prepared and for sell! They even have vegan options!

I got the fries nachos with steak and I am in heaven. The food is phenomenal and the service was amazing. The price was very very fair for the amount and quality of the food. I’m currently typing this while I’m eating the fries and am already looking forward to the next time I go in! Highly recommend!
